The Microsoft E3 Conference

These are the notes for today’s Microsoft conference. Basically, the minute by minute updates for the conference. It’s a lot, so you might want to check back in later for the neater conference summary.

  • While we are waiting for the conference to begin, leave some predictions in the comments. PS4, Xbox, Ubisoft etc. wishes and predictions are welcome! ETA
  • If you are cool and want to hang around the site and still watch the stream, here’s a link to Gamespot’s coverage. I’ll be honest, if you aren’t watching the stream, you’re only missing a bunch of guys awkwardly repeating things that they probably read on Reddit.
  • I feel the need to keep typing because nothing is going on yet and a lot of you are here. So I’ll be honest… I own a PS4. But I’ll retain my journalistic integrity! XBONE IS AWESOME TOO GUYS!
  • There is a new Killer Instinct trailer being shown. It was like 15 seconds, but it looked like good arcadey fun though.
  • So as some have pointed out, every major gaming site is doing the same thing I am. Good for them. I welcome the competition!
  • Microsoft is showing little snippets of stuff here and there. Nothing big yet though. The real conference is starting any moment now
  • And here we go! The conference is beginning. Phil Spencer takes the stage!
  • They have to get all of the niceties out of the way. It will be a few minutes before any news gets smashed into our faces.
  • “Fans are awesome, thanks for spending money, please spend more thank you please!”
  • Looks like Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will be the first game highlighted. Let’s see how it looks.
  • Lots of holograms and near-future tech. A mission in South Korea. A plane crash. Classic Call of Duty stuff.
  • Wow. Call of Duty looks NICE. Still looks like classic Call of Duty.
  • Guns have holographic HUDs. No HUD on screen! Think Halo.
  • Oh man, I think the player character has a jetpack.
  • Nice shot of downtown Seoul which seems to be under attack.
  • Guys. This game looks fantastic. Those particle effects… Hnnnngghh…
  • Gun fights seem like classic CoD. Nothing flashy.
  • Holy crap, there are swarms of what look like drones. I don’t even know but it looks crazy. Like a swarm of bugs.
  • Another look at some cool tech. A shield that can be moved around for portable cover. An enemy detection system that overlays enemies with red holograms.
  • Everything is holograms.
  • Why do we still have to play with a silent protagonist?
  • That silent protagonist just lot his freakin’ arm! Possible cybernetic enhancements after this mission? We’ll see. That’s it for the CoD stuff.
  • Now Dan Greenawalt from Turn 10 studios is on the stage. Forza time!
  • Nurburgring?!? Holy moly! Available for free for all Forza 5 owners.
  • Forza Horizon 2 is takingt he forefront now. Ralph Fulton discussing it. More cars, full day/night cycle, dynamic weather and 1080p confirmed. Xbox exclusive of course.
  • Sounds like Horizon 2 is taking the Drive Club route. You can build huge clubs.
  • Forza always looks great. Horizon 2 is no different. Oh man, the rain made me mess my pants. I’ll just have to power through.
  • Lambo doors… Lambo doors everywhere.
  • Over 200 cars!
  • Now it’s time for a look at Evolve! Lots of action. Exclusive Xbox DLC. Looks fun and scary.
  • Ubisoft takes the stage with Assassin’s Creed: Unity. Set during the French Revolution. Build a brotherhood of Assassins with friends.
  • Lots of chaos in the streets. The assassin (Dorian I think) makes his way through a riotous crowd to his target.
  • He takes down a guard and all hell breaks loose. He is assisted by other assassins. I’m not sure if it is an NPC allies or friends.
  • Classic AC climbing, fighting and target hunting. The decor of the buildings is rendered beautifully. And so it is meant to be four friends playing online together. So co-op story looks to be a big part of the game. That’s always fun.
  • Severed heads on pikes! The crowd doesn’t know if they should cheer.
  • BioWare! Appears to be Dragon Age.
  • Dark, moody and downright creepy trailer. A big step up in graphics for the series.
  • They are fighting Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon!
  • Dragon Age: Inquisition coming October 7th.
  • Insomniac games! Getting a fun look at Sunset Overdrive! Cartoon-y, arcade-y, gory action. Looks ridiculous and fun.
  • Contaminated energy drinks turned people into mutants. There are survivors: both heroes and villains. Man, I’m jealous of Xbox bros. Game looks awesome.
  • Customizable characters, crazy weapons. Now its demo time.
  • Crazy parkour/grinding. Exploding mutants into fireworks, freezing them solid… Mini boss! Constantly moving, firing and switching weapons!
  • The game is definitely cartoony-y but it looks good all the same.
  • Eight player co-op. October 28th, Xbox exclusive.
  • Dead Rising 3 DLC. Play as any of the Dead Rising heroes. Dress them up as a lot of Capcom characters. Super Ultra Dead Rising 3 EX Hyper Deluxe Ultra. Or something.
  • Capcom is poking fun at their Street Fighter editions. It’s a funny joke. The crowd laughed.
  • Disney Fantasia Music Evolved? It’s made by the company that makes Dance Central. Dance Central Spotlight is coming in September. Digital only.
  • David Eckelberry is on the stage now. Introducing Fable Legends. Multiplayer beta coming this year I think.
  • Four characters, each controlled by a different player. So yet another co-op game for the XBONE.
  • Similar visual style to Sunset Overdrive. Pretty yet cartoon-ish.
  • So Fable came first… But it looks really, really similar to Sunset Overdrive. That’s a good thing though.
  • You can play as the villain! Every enemy the heroes fight is controlled by the villain player. Looks like good strategic fun playing as the villain.
  • Multiplayer beta coming in the fall!
  • Another XBOX exclusive on screen. Art style sorta kinda similar to Knack.
  • It’s called Project Spark. I have missed out on this game. Players create worlds, missions, races etc. Looks fun, family friendly. Is this something new or am I totally out of the loop on this one? And holy balls its Conker!
  • Moon Studios is showing an Xbox exclusive. Looks like a dark, side-scrolling platformer. My lack of Xbox knowledge is beginning to show. I am ashamed.
  • Ori and the Blind Forest. A very pretty and intriguing indie game.
  • I know those Gregorian monk chants from anywhere. It’s Halo time mofos!
  • Master Chief is flying through space while holding on to a spikey mine thing. And then he drops it on a ship. So badass.
  • Bonnie Ross from 343 Industries is on the stage to tell us more about Halo. Looks like another game really focused on Master Chief as a character. Sounds like a good idea at last. Oh and its Halo 5: Guardians if you didn’t know.
  • Halo: The Master Chief Collection coming to Xbox. Contains most of the Halo games up to this point.
  • Four games: Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4. All on one disc.
  • They are playing some Spartans vs. Elites. Some classic Halo MP action.
  • The Master Chief Collection coming November 11. 4000 gamerscore available. Every map ever, running at 1080p, 60 FPS.
  • They spoke for a minute about Ridley Scott’s Halo Nightfall short.
  • Halo 5 beta coming this holiday season! The multiplayer in Guardians looks great. I can’t wait to see more footage from the game. Not a whole lot other than CG footage at this point.
  • Phil Spencer is back with a Limbo shirt.
  • And of course they are showing a game from the studio that made Limbo. Will debut on Xbox in early 2015. Looks like another dark, desaturated platformer. Less dark than Limbo, but still really moody and kind of creepy.
  • Okay, a lot creepy. It’s called Inside. It looks really, really good if you like Limbo-type games.
  • A bald guy whose name I didn’t catch is discussing the [email protected] system. Tiny studios are given the tools to self-publish on Xbox. Now they are showing tons of indie games. I got a glimpse of Plague Inc!
  • They are flashing so many games… I can’t keep up! Lots of platformers, horror games, puzzle games… SO MANY INDIE GAMES!
  • A game by Techland was flashed there briefly. Neat.
  • World premiere time! Beautiful CG footage. Facial animations are scary good. HOLY FUCKING SHIT IT’S TOMB RAIDER!
  • Rise of the Tomb Raider! Sorry for the language but I wasn’t expecting that. Looks even darker than the last Tomb Raider game.
  • Witcher 3 time! A mission ten hours into the game: hunting a griffin. Getting a good look at the Witcher abilities. He shot the griffin and is now chasing it as it flies over head.
  • Soem good PvE combat. The swordplay looks MUCH better than Witcher 2 and that’s saying something. A little magic was on display too.
  • Wow, the graphics are beautiful. Facial animations are spot on!
  • The game is running really smoothly. Time for a battle with the griffin!
  • Hmm… A lot of hack and slash, a little magic. Fighting looks a little clunky against the larger enemies.
  • Looks like we get to see some Killer Instinct. I never played it, but I have heard mixed reviews.
  • Nope, I think it’s a reboot of another older game.
  • It’s a fighting game… That’s all I know. It’s all CGI. Lots of energy blasts, energy swords, energy punches. Not a great deal of footage.
  • It’s Phantom Dust. I’m not familiar with it so I’ll be waiting for some real in game footage.
  • Massive Games is taking the stage to discuss Tom Clancy’s The Division! YES!
  • It’s another section of gameplay. Desolate New York is snowy and overrun with bandits on Christmas Day.
  • Hologram map. Awesome.
  • Lot’s of hologram tech in this game as well. The future is holograms!
  • The Division looks fantastic though. The lighting, smoke and snow effects are unbelievable. Combat time now!
  • Wow. Just wow. Combat is incredibly fast paced, fluid and exciting. Moving from cover to cover seems key. The way the characters respond to the environment is mindblowing. For example, they close the car door as they slide into cover behind the car.
  • Platinum Games is introducing something new with… Dragons… Mosnters… I don’t know but it looks cool.
  • Scalebound. Looks like you fight other monsters with your dragon bros. Maybe this will be the game that Lair should have been. Anyone remember Lair? Just me? Okay….
  • A new open world game for Xbox exclusively. Gang action… Cool suits… Is it Crackdown?
  • Lots of explosions, crazy action, futuristic stuff… They just destroyed an entire building to kill one gangster…
  • It’s totally Crackdown!
  • My main man Phil the thrill is back on stage. Looks like he is wrapping up the conference. I’ll admit it, that was a hell of a conference! Microsoft won’t be having sales problems for too long.
  • The usual wrapup montage featuring all of the games we just saw. It’s gonna be a good couple of years for gamers!
  • Thanks for tuning in! Check back in an hour for the EA conference!
